Ⅰ. About Chinese language study

•  You are expected to earnestly participate in the studying and testing of all subjects required by the curriculum.

•  New students will be required to sit for a placement test. They will be placed into classes based on their performance in the placement test.

•  Before the new semester starts, the school will announce the information regarding the division of students into classes and school timetable at the bulletin boards in the lecture building, the student dorm, as well as in the office of the school. Such information will also be released online: http://www.sie.sjtu.edu.cn .

•  In the first week of the new semester, you may attend the class you are placed in on a trial basis. If you find this class does not fit with your Chinese level, you may go to the Office of Educational Affairs to request a transfer to another class during the second week. The school will address such requests according to specific circumstances. You cannot change classes by yourself.

•  If you ask for leave for one day or less, you only need to get approval from your class teacher who will report to the Office of Educational Affairs for record. But if the leave of absence exceeds one day, you must get approval from the Office yourself. If the leave of absence exceeds three days, the Office must report to the Dean for approval. If you do not attend school without asking for leave or you fail to get an approval, it will be dealt with as an absence without leave record.

Ⅱ. About textbooks

•  You should buy the textbooks according to the level of class you are assigned to at the registration of each semester.

•  If you need to transfer to another class one week after the semester begins, you may go to the designated place (to be announced by the school at registration) to buy new textbooks. You may return the old textbooks if they are not written on or spoilt.

•  You cannot return textbooks for elective courses.

Ⅲ. Assessment and score report

•  Assessments are made on a semester basis, which consists of classroom performance, mid-term exams and final exams.

•  Classroom performance includes your class attendance, attentiveness and the quality of your homework. Full marks are 100.

•  Mid-term exams are held during the 10 th week of every semester, with final exams during the 20 th week. Full marks for both exams are 100.

•  The overall grades for each course in each semester are made up of three parts, namely classroom performance (10%), mid-term exam (20%) and final exam (70%).

•  In the case that the total amount of your absence (an accumulation of sick leave, business leave and absence without leave) in terms of class hours exceeds one third of the time required by a given course, you are not allowed to take the final exam of that course.

•  Failure in two or more courses in terms of the overall grades of every semester will disqualify you from moving up to a higher level of study in the next semester.
