Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was founded in 1896 as Nan Yang College. During the last century, by taking “first-class talent cultivation” as its principal mission, and with a tradition of “high starting points, solid foundation, strict requirements, and keen on practice and innovation” as it aims to perfect its system of talent cultivation, it has developed on a path of self-improvement by school-building; nation-saving through industry; energizing China through science and education; and reinvigorating China through human resource development. In the process, it has adopted the philosophy of “Gratitude and Responsibility”; and the motto of “Seeking truth from facts with a down-to-earth spirit, Daring to blaze new trails and keeping abreast of the times”.
In the 1920s and 1930s, SJTU was crowned as the “oriental MIT”. Over the century, SJTU has fostered over 200,000 talents, spreading all over the world, among them famous statesmen like Jiang Zemin and China’s “Father of Space Technology” Qian Xuesen; winners of State Top Scientific and Technological Award — mathematician Wu Wenjun, chemist Xu Guangxian and hematologist Wang Zhenyi. Over 200 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are SJTU alumni; and of the 23 researchers of “Atom bomb, Hydrogen bomb and Satellite” who have been nationally commended, six are SJTU alumni. SJTU faculty, students and alumni have created many “firsts” in China’s modern history in their own fields such as technology, education and medicine. In recent years, it has been widely acknowledged that many young SJTU alumni have made outstanding contribution to the economic and social development of China.
School of International Education of SJTU(SIE) is a special school responsible for admission, registration and management of international students coming from all parts of the world. It provides Chinese Language programs for 4-year undergraduate and Linguistics & Applied Linguistics Master Degree studies as well as programs on various levels of learning and training. From the year 2002, SJTU holds HSK five times a year.

SIE locates at XuHui campus of SJTU,Xu Hui district of Shanghai, Close to it are many consulates of foreign countries. Several public transit systems are within walking distance for it, such as subway,light-rail, bus lines, etc. Nan Jing Road, Huai Hai Road, Hong Qiao Airport, Shanghai Railway Station, Lu Jia Zui(Pu Dong)could be reached within 20 minutes.
