How to apply for residence permit visa?

Pertaining to the law of the People's Republic of China, SJTU is only responsible for helping the visa application of the international students and their relatives; however, the assistance to the visa application does not guarantee the successful application. Due to the changes of the law of the People's Republic of China and the relevant rules, the following explanation may vary from the latest situation, which leads to the possible failure of the application for the residence permit visa. We express our sincere regret for the possibility arising out of and thanks for your consideration.At SJTU,the Office of Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration is in charge of Visa-related affairs for international students.

I. I am a freshman

A. I hold the effective residence permit visa or the expiration period of the previous visa is within three months; I have taken the physical examination in the hospital designated by the department of Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and have achieved the physical examination report.

1. Fill in the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence". Students who stay off-campus could conduct the procedures to the public security bureau (police station office) where the residence is located and the valid period of the registration form shall exceed that of the residence permit visa; students who stay in campus could conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day;

2. Visa Application Form. Please go to the Office of Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration, SJTU Please bring the following materials:

a)        Original of the passport;

b)        One 2-inch photo;

c)        Admission notice;

d)      The original and the copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence (shall be applied in Shanghai);

e)        Shall pay the full tuition of the whole year;

3. Apply for the new visa in Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau

Working hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:0016:30.

l  Bus (from Xuhui Campus): take Metro Line 1 from Xujiahui Station to People's Square Station, transfer by Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum; or take Metro Line 9 from Xujiahui Station, after 9 stops and get off at Mid Yanggao Road Station, then walk for around 12 minutes and 30 seconds, you can arrive at the Bureau.

l  Bus (from Minhang Campus): take Metro Line 5 from Dongchuan Road Station to Xinzhuang Station, transfer by Metro Line 1 to People's Square and then transfer by Metro Line 2 to Shanghai Science & Technology Museum.

l  Bus (from Xuhui Campus): take Bus No. 911 at the No. 3 Gate of SJTU to Gubei Road Station; or take Metro Line 10 from Shanghai Jiaotong University Station, after 3 stops and get off at Yili Road Station. Walk for around 9 minutes and reach the destination.

l  Bus (from Minhang Campus): take Metro Line 5 from Dongchuan Road Station to Xinzhuang Station, transfer by Metro Line 1 to Shanghai Stadium Station, then transfer by Metro Line 4 to Hongqiao Road Station and lastly transfer by Metro Line 10 to Yili Road Station. Walk for around 9 minutes and reach the destination.

B. I hold the effective residence permit visa or the expiration period of the previous visa is within three months; and I have not taken the physical examination in the hospital designated by the department of Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and have not achieved the physical examination report.

1. Fill in the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence". Students who stay off-campus could conduct the procedures to the public security bureau (police station office) where the residence is located and the valid period of the registration form shall exceed that of the residence permit visa; students who stay in campus could conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day;

2. Have physical examination in Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (the exclusive site for physical examination)

    Address: No. 15 Jinbang Road (original No. 1701, Hami Road)

  Note: it will take around two weeks from the reservation day to finally getting the physical examination report

3. Visa Application Form. Please conduct the procedures in the Office of Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration, SJTU .  Please bring the following materials:

a)        Original of the passport;

b)        One 2-inch photo;

c)        Admission notice;

d)      The original and the copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence (shall be conducted in Shanghai);

e)       Physical Examination Report (signed by Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau)

f)         Shall pay the full tuition of the whole year;

 4. Apply for new visa in Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau (same as above).

 

     C. Tourism visa (L) (applicable to most of the countries in Europe, America, and Asia) or student visa (X) (applicable to all the countries)

1. Fill in the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence". Students who stay off-campus could conduct the procedures to the public security bureau (police station office) where the residence is located and the valid period of the registration form shall exceed that of the residence permit visa; students who stay in campus could conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day;

2. Have physical examination in Shanghai International Travel Healthcare Center (the exclusive site for physical examination)

II. I am a senior student

Senior students could go directly to the Office of Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration, SJTU. Please bring the following materials:

a)        The original and copy of the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence". Students who stay off-campus could conduct the procedures to the public security bureau (police station office) where the residence is located and the valid period of the registration form shall exceed that of the residence permit visa; students who stay in campus could conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day;

b)        Original of the passport;

c)        One 2-inch photo;

d)       Shall pay the full tuition of the whole year;

 

III. I am the relative of the international student

1. The school only helps the relatives of the international students who hold "L" visa and have arrived at Shanghai for the visa application;

2. Students and their relatives could go directly to the Office of Service Center for Exit-Entry Administration, SJTU. Please bring the following materials:

a)        The original and copy of the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence" of the students' relatives. Relatives who stay off-campus could conduct the procedures to the public security bureau (police station office) where the residence is located and the valid period of the registration form shall exceed that of the residence permit visa; relatives who stay in campus could conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day;

b)        Original of the passport of the student and his/her relatives; 

c)        Original and copy of the credential on the family relations (if submitted by the overseas institution, it shall be certified by the embassies and consulate generals in foreign countries, and if necessary, submit the translation piece by the domestic translation companies);

d)       One 2-inch photo of the relative;

e)        Shall pay the full tuition of the whole year;

3. Pertaining to the law of China, now the school could only apply twice for the student's relatives the "Zero Entry" L-visa with the valid period of six months and the valid period shall be less than the residence permit period of the students. Upon the expiration of the "L" visa twice, the relatives must go abroad to re-apply for the "L" visa to enter China again. (Note: zero-entry visa does not permit the entry and exit of the border);

4. Students of most of the countries could hold the Admission Notice to the local embassy or consulate general to apply for the "L" visa for their relatives.

 

IV. I want to suspend my schooling (quit school)

Students applying for school suspension (quitting) are required to change the residence permit into tourism visa (L).

1. Please make application to Academic Administration Office (Xuhui: Room 103, No. 1 Teaching Building; Minhang: Room 304, old Executive Building), get and fill in the application form of school suspension and quitting;

2. Please go to the Student Affairs Office (Xuhui: Room 111, No. 1 Teaching Building; Minhang: Room 304, old Executive Building) to draw the materials required for visa change, you shall bring the following materials:

a)        Original of the passport;

b)        One 2-inch photo;

c)        The original and the copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence (shall be conducted in Shanghai);

3. Apply for new visa in Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Shanghai Public Security Bureau (same as above).

Note: the visa change requires at least a week and it's not necessary to book the air ticket in advance, otherwise, the ticket will be changed too.

 

V. Q&A

1. Q: I am an international student studying in a Chinese university (senior high school), is it necessary for me to return to my home country and apply for X visa in Chinese embassy (consulate general)?

  A: If you have the residence permit or other valid visa, you are not necessary to your home country for re-application and the school could help with the application.

 

2. Q: Is it necessary for me to have physical examination?

  A: Pertaining to the law of China, if your learning period exceeds 180 days, you must have physical examination in the hospital designated by the department of Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, usually being "International Travel Healthcare Center".  

 

3. Q: Under what kind of situation could I skip the physical examination?

  A: There are two kinds of situation. First, you hold the effective residence permit and you have taken part in the physical examination; second, you have taken part in the physical examination in the designated hospital in China within 6 months before the application.  

 

4. Q: Is it necessary for having physical examination in Shanghai?

  A: Not necessary. The physical examination report signed by the Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureaus in China is applicable, usually being "International Travel Healthcare Center". If you have the examination in the public hospital in foreign countries, you shall submit it to Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau for verification; the unqualified report shall require the physical examination again.

 

5. Q: How could I have physical examination?

  A: There are two means. First, you can make online reservation (www.sithc.com); second, the school will invite the hospital to have physical examination for the students when the school opens.

 

6. Q: Am I bound to take part in the physical examination organized by the school?

  A: No. The physical examination organized by the school have fixed date and the report will be delivered a week after the examination. If you have a very short visa period, there's no enough time for the physical examination.

 

7. Q: How much will it take for the physical examination in Shanghai?

  A: About 600 Yuan.

 

8. Q: Whether the school could apply for the visa for the students in advance?

  A: Yes. Please refer to the above clause "I am a freshman", and sign the "Statement on Prior Visa Application". The valid period of the prior visa application is September 30th of the current year and is subject to extension after formal registration to school.

 

9. Q: I am a relative of the international student and will the school help with my visa application?

  A: Yes. Please refer to the above clause "I am the relative of the international student".

 

10. Q: How to apply for "Registration Form for Temporary Residence"?

   A: If the students want to live off-campus, you can present the Contract of Tenancy or the address in Chinese to the Office of Students Affairs of the School of International Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and fill out the “Registration Form for Living Off-campus”; then you can present the “Registration Form for Living Off-campus” to apply for "Registration Form for Temporary Residence". If the students live in the campus, you can conduct the procedures in Room 104, Dorm No. 9 (Xuhui Campus) or Room 109, No. 8 Building (Minhang Campus) when you check in the first day.

 

11. Q: If my off-campus address changes, will I register again?

   A: You must make registration. First, you shall present the “Registration Form for Temporary Residence” to the Student Affairs Office to change the address and second, you shall present the “Form of Change of Address” to the Visa Office of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau for the change of address.

 

12. Q: May I apply for the residence permit with the “Registration Form for Temporary Residence” submitted out of Shanghai?

   A: No. You must present the Shanghai “Registration Form for Temporary Residence”.

 

 13: Q: I am an international student from XX, which has not established the formal diplomatic relationship with China, how could I apply for the visa?

A: First you shall achieve the effective visa of China and then go through the normal procedures.

 

 14: Q: After admission, how long could I apply for the residence permit?

   A: The valid period of the visa shall be within the valid period of the passport, and at the same time, shall not exceed the learning period.

 

15: Q: If I apply for school suspension or quitting, is it necessary for me to change the residence visa into "L" visa?

   A: Yes. Otherwise the residence permit will be cancelled forcibly and you will be put on the blacklist, which will affect the future entry into China. In addition, students of a few countries could change (shorten) the residence permit period by application to cancel the visa. The above two means require at least five working days for the procedures.
