4. Current and Past Research
My two main areas of research are as follows:
(i) Typology of Sinitic languages
My main research over the past 25 years has been on the typology of Sinitic languages whose diversity remains comparatively untapped, compared with the enormous amount of research already completed for just one language in this taxon: standard Mandarin. This research is unique in being the first large scale investigation to describe typological differences between Sinitic or Chinese languages, from both perspectives of syntax and morphology, making use of a database of spoken discourse materials.
Languages included in this long-term study and also as part of a database of transcriptions are Taiwanese Southern Min, Cantonese Yue, Shanghainese Wu, Northern Mandarin, Nanchang Gan and Hakka. This research has been supported by both the Australian Research Council and more recently by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (2009-2013) which enabled a team of seven researchers to work on Min dialects – Shaowu and Hui’an, Jixi Hui, Yichun Gan, Nanning Pinghua, Shangshui Central Plains Mandarin and Xianghua (Hunan province). A new series of grammars will be published by De Gruyter Mouton (Berlin/Boston) entitled Studies in the Grammar and the Typology of the Sinitic languages of China.
(ii) Medieval Chinese and the diachronic syntax of Southern Min
My second research domain concerns the diachronic syntax of Southern Min (Hokkien) and involves a collaboration with my colleague, Prof. Alain Peyraube from CRLAO, Paris, a specialist in Medieval Chinese syntax. Our objective is to track changes in grammar, specifically syntax, comparing the formative period for Southern Min languages from the Late Medieval period (7th – 13th centuries) with the Early Modern period beginning in the 16th century. This involves using rare historical materials on Southern Min languages, including the first known grammar of a Chinese language from 1620, uncovered by Prof. Peyraube in a library in Barcelona, Spain.
