'Impact'has become a buzz word and is increasingly used as a criterion for decisions onresearch policy and research funding. The impact of linguistic research hasbeen particularly visible in a number of areas including but not limited tolanguage variation and change, language and politics, language policy andlanguage use, language and identity (e.g. in relation to professional identity,gender, ethnicity or age), corporate and health care discourse, leadership andteamwork and linguistic vitality among others. The impact of the differentepistemological and methodological approaches and the impact of the language ofimpact, however, are more rarely addressed.
I-mean4 aims to take a critical approach to impact and examine:
* theimpact of different theoretical and methodological approaches to thedevelopment of the field and certain key topic areas (e.g. language andidentity, language and culture, language and meaning),
* theimpact of sociopragmatic and discourse analytic research outside academia,
* theimpact and application of linguistic methodologies and analyses in socialsciences,
* theimpact of social interaction on language change synchronically anddiachronically.

Papersare invited from researchers working across different linguistic fields andtraditions, focusing on any aspect of language and impact.
Conference themes:
• The impact of widely used frameworks on theunderstanding of language use and negotiation of meaning.
• The impact of different methodological approachesto spoken data, including Ethnomethodology, Interactional Sociolinguistics,Conversation Analysis, (Critical) Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics,multivariate analysis, Discourse Completion Tasks, (modified) matched-guisetests and multi-modal analysis.
• The impact of the popularization of the internet onresearch methodologies, traditions and ethics.
• The impact of globalisation on the study oflanguage and culture.
• The impact of mobility on multilingualism inprofessional settings.
• The impact of constructionist and post modernapproaches on the study of the relationship between language and identity.
• The impact of language and gender studies on thediscourses of gender and sexuality.
• The impact of sociopragmatic studies on languageteaching and learning.
• The impact of critical approaches on language andpolitics.
• The impact of language policy on language use.
Inline with the i-mean tradition, the conference aims to encouragemultidisciplinary thinking and to create new pathways in linguistic research.The conference will, as usual, include both specialist Panels and a summativeRound Table at which the keynote speakers are invited to debate the conferencetheme.
INVITEDPANELS
I-mean4 will host two invited panels. Details will be announced by the end of October2014 or soon after.
Panelproposals are invited by 1 December 2014. Decisions about panels will be madeby 15 December. Panel organisers should oversee abstracts from panel members,with up to 6 papers in a panel (2 X 90 minute slots). Individual panel membersshould submit abstracts, clearly marked with Panel names, to the main conferenceemail address by 31 January 2015 as below. All abstracts (in panels and themain conference) will be subject to double blind review as always.
INDIVIDUALPAPERS:
ABSTRACTS of no more than 350 words (max and including references, ifabsolutely necessary)are invited. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is the 31 January 2015.Abstracts should not include the name and affiliation of the author(s).
